You Have 30 days to Make or Break a New Hire

Turnover is expensive! How much does a new hire cost your company/? Numerous studies over the years are pretty consistent. A new hire will cost your company at least TWICE the annual compensation of that hire in the first year.

And you have just 30 days to convince them to stay and commit wholeheartedly to your company, its culture and value.

A great hire and a well-defined new hire /onboarding process is tantamount to cost control and a consistent ROI.

  • Is your onboarding process fair and consistent or discriminatory and irregular?

  • What are the steps you need to take for a successful onboard process?

  • How to avoid having an unhappy new hire by avoiding onboard/new hire mistakes?

During this 30-day window, new hires will decide whether they want to commit to your company, or try to find better employment. Most employees know in the first 3 days if they are going to be happy with their new job.

Several things new hires want from the get-go.

  1. The new hire process should be uniform, consistent step-by-step process.

  2. Once hired, most new hires want a “ramp-up” time to get comfortable with their surroundings job functions, but not a long, drawn-out process.

  3. A support system to help new hire to meet other employees and make friends.

  4. Technology accessibility and a point of reference for accessing internal information.

  5. Shadow a fellow worker in the first several days to get a handle on the company culture, and  workplace environment.

Several things new hires are frustrated with from the get-go.

  1. Most new hires are frustrated with a lack of direction, training and access to the tools they need to adequately do their job.

  2. Not having a single person to guide them through the new hire onboarding process for mandatory paperwork, policy and procedure education, benefit explanations- and other internal functions of how the company works.

  3. Meeting the top management officers and feeling a part of the team.

  4. Having a clear point-of-contact for questions particularly regarding policies, benefits, and procedures.

A book could be written about employee behavior, particularly new employees, but recognizing that finding and retaining valuable new employees is a start to bringing hire costs under control.
